Can CBD Help with Multiple Sclerosis?

Cannabis has been used for millennia daily to treat symptoms of various diseases. Over the past few decades, researchers identified specific cannabinoid receptors in mammalian tissues and cells. These CB1 and CB2 receptors are located throughout the body, including the brain, organs, connective tissue, glands, and immune system. They’re even found in the membranes surrounding every cell.

Now that scientists have had more time to explore how cannabinoids work, they’ve learned that naturally occurring endocannabinoids help maintain homeostasis of these systems; they also play major roles in memory formation and recall (episodic-like memory), appetite (regulating dietary intake), pain perception (injury response) and emotions like happiness or sadness (behavioral responses).

Endocannabinoids are essential to an animal’s overall well-being.

And when they’re unbalanced, the body suffers disease. Endocannabinoid deficiencies have been linked to autoimmune dysfunction and neurodegenerative disorders like MS (multiple sclerosis). Since cannabinoids affect many systems in the body, treating conditions this way is quite elegant; by focusing on only one aspect of the illness, doctors can help patients achieve better results.

Anecdotal Evidence:

There are numerous accounts of people suffering from multiple sclerosis who found success in treating their chronic pain with CBD oil. A quick Google search will turn up more than 200 unique stories involving CBD oil for MS treatment alone! One woman says had her right side completely immobilized from the disease before trying CBD oil. She wrote, “In a matter of 4 days I’m practically walking with very little pain.”

CBD’s success in treating MS symptoms may be linked to its ability to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress within the body. Studies have shown that CBD can reduce oxidative damage in neurons by up to 30 percent! This suggests that CBD might help prevent neuron death and promote neuroplasticity, which would greatly improve daily life for people living with multiple sclerosis or other autoimmune disorders.

Is There Evidence in Humans?

A group of researchers from Brazil recently conducted a double-blind trial studying the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) on patients who suffer from primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS). The group administered either 200mg/day of CBD or placebo to 34 PPMS patients, following them for one month.

At the end of the trial, researchers found that subjects treated with CBD had reduced disease progression, compared to the control group who received no treatment. Notably, there did not appear to be any significant side effects from this treatment!

These results were published in the journal Phytotherapy Research. Scientists concluded: “The study provides first clinical evidence that Cannabidiol may be effective and safe in reducing disease activity and progression in patients with PPMS.”

What Does This Mean?

It’s important to note that this was a controlled trial done on humans, not rodents, so we can assume more studies will follow. What we do know about CBD oil thus far is encouraging! Even though trials like these and others all involve small sample sizes (n=1-50), they’re extremely valuable because they encourage other researchers to investigate further.

One of the most promising benefits of cannabinoid therapy via CBD oil is its ability to reduce inflammation throughout the body. While opioids are often used to reduce inflammation, they’re highly addictive and come with the risk of overdose or unpleasant side effects. CBD oil is 100% natural and shows promise as a safe way to manage chronic health conditions.

CBD cream for ms pain:

Cannabis is a greenish-gray mixture of the crushed leaves, stems, and flower buds of Cannabis sativa. It usually is smoked as rolled cigarettes (joints), cigars (blunts), or in a pipe.

Marijuana also can be brewed as tea or cooked into food. This gives it the name “edibles.” A marijuana concentrate is called hash, wax, shatter, dab, or butter. Hash oil typically refers to concentrated forms of marijuana because the THC has been extracted from the plant material by solvent extraction.

CBD oil for cancer treatments:

Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds found in marijuana and hemp. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is one of these compounds and gives the user a “high,” acting as a hallucinogen, which results in impaired bodily or mental control, an increased heart rate, and changes in blood pressure.

Best CBD for multiple sclerosis:

CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of at least 113 active cannabinoids identified in cannabis. It is a major phytocannabinoid, accounting for up to 40% of the plant’s extract. CBD does not appear to have any intoxicating effects such as those caused by THC in marijuana but may have modest anti-inflammatory and unrelated cytotoxic effects.

Findings reported by Wilkinson et al., (2010) provide strong evidence that the cannabinoids, particularly CBD found in extracts from cannabis plant species (including marijuana and hemp), are potent modulators of both ion channels and other neurotransmitter receptors found in brain cells this explains why they may impact symptoms such as pain, muscle spasms, bladder dysfunction, and tremor.

Cannabis has been around for thousands of years and is believed to have originated in South or Central Asia. The two main species of cannabis are Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica. Both Cannabis sativa and indica contain varying amounts of psychoactive and nonpsychoactive components.

Hemp oil for skin cancer:

THC is a CB1 and CB2 receptor agonist. This means it stimulates these receptors which may lead to the feeling of euphoria commonly associated with cannabis use. THC also prevents the breakdown of anandamide, another cannabinoid that reduces pain sensation in your body, through a process called inhibition of fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH).

CBD oil for anxiety reviews:

In general, there are three different types of cannabinoids: endocannabinoid produced ( naturally inside the body), phytocannabinoids (compounds from plants), and artificial cannabinoids or synthesized medications based on natural derivatives or by modifying the structure of THC.
